ABOUT

Hyperhidrosis (HH) is a common condition in which a person sweats excessively.

CAUSES

It is caused by overactive eccrine sweat glands. These glands secrete more sweat than is required by the body for thermoregulation.

TREATMENTS

After a consultation with our Family Doctor, a variety of options will be discussed. They range from topical agents to surgery and injectables such as Botox.

What is Botox?
Botox is a neuromodulator protein that safely disables nerves and muscles. It is a non-surgical treatment to reduce sweating.

How does it work?
Botox injections work by blocking signals from nerves that activate the sweat glands, thereby reducing sweat production.

What can I expect during treatment?
A fine needle is used to administer Botox just below the surface of the skin. There are multiple injections per site. It is a simple and quick procedure done right in the doctor’s office. It is generally well tolerated and feels like many mosquito bites. We have a variety of numbing agents and pain distraction techniques available if necessary.

How long does it last?
Botox takes 3 days to 2 weeks to take effect. Patients report a reduction in sweating, anywhere between 3 and 12 months. The procedure can be repeated once the effects wear off. Since everyone is different, results can vary.

How much does it cost?
Most insurance companies cover the cost of the Botox. Richmond Square Medical Centre Pharmacy works with patients and their insurance to help with coverage through the Botox Access program. In addition, there is a $250 injection fee.

How do I book an appointment?
Botox for Hyperhidrosis is performed by our specialty Medical Laser Clinic with Dr. Kroetsch and R.N.,B.N. Cynthia Behm-Southam.
